KARACHI: Traffic police have decided to ensure the implementation of the helmet law in the city to deal with the increasing number of motorcycle accidents.
A Karachi Traffic Police officer said that initially, three routes have been banned for motorcyclists who are not wearing helmets.
The DIG Traffic said that motorcyclists without helmets will not be allowed to use the routes from Metropole to Clifton Bridge, from PIDC to Saudi Consulate and Shahra-e-Faisal.
He said that in the first phase, these routes will be made into model roads and later it will be extended to other parts of the port city.
The official said that the decision has been taken to prevent the increasing number of motorcycle accidents, adding that a special awareness campaign will be launched during Ramadan to make motorcyclists aware of the importance of wearing helmets.
He warned that strict action will be taken against riders without helmets after Ramadan, with heavy fines imposed on those violating the rules.
Furthermore, traffic officials will be provided with a modern locking system, which will allow motorcyclists to unlock their two-wheelers only after showing their helmets.
The DIG Traffic clarified that wherever a motorcycle is parked, it will be locked. The rider will be allowed to unlock it only after wearing a helmet.
