LHC orders removal of NADRA Chairman Lt. Gen. Munir Afsar

LHC orders reinstatement of NADRA chairman

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) directed the removal of Lieutenant General Muhammad Munir Afsar from his position as Chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

The court’s decision came in response to a petition filed by Ashba Kamran, challenging the appointment of Lt. Gen. Afsar, a serving army officer, as NADRA chairman by the caretaker government in October 2023.

The petitioner argued that the caretaker government had overstepped its authority by amending the NADRA Act to appoint a serving army officer and that such a move was not permissible under the law.

Justice Asim Hafeez, who pronounced the verdict, agreed with the petitioner’s contention that the caretaker government could not interfere in permanent policy matters.

The court’s order to remove Lt. Gen. Afsar from his post is seen as a significant development, with implications for the governance and administration of NADRA.
