ICC Player Rankings 2025: Saim Ayub becomes number one all-rounder again

KARACHI: In a groundbreaking achievement, Pakistan’s rising star, Saim Ayub, has been nominated for the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award for 2024 in recognition of his exceptional form and impressive performances throughout the year.

Ayub is one of four talented cricketers vying for the title that recognizes the best-emerging talent in the game. With a stunning impact on the international stage, Ayub has impressed across formats with his aggressive batting style, amassing 1,254 runs in 41 innings, with three centuries and one half-century in just nine One-Day International (ODI) matches.

Ayub’s incredible consistency and ability to perform in different conditions have marked him as one of the most exciting prospects for Pakistan. His nomination for the Emerging Cricketer Award is a well-deserved recognition of his hard work and dedication.

The emerging talent was named Player of the Series after Pakistan’s dominant 3-0 series win over South Africa, which came after a significant rise in the ICC rankings.

Ayub leaped 57 places to the 23rd position with 603 points, proof of how he had grown rapidly and developed as a cricketer. Consistently and impressively playing and scoring two centuries in the series has put Ayub at the forefront as one of cricket’s brightest young talents.

However, Ayub is up against three other young cricketers who have also enjoyed phenomenal years. Gus Atkinson, a speedster for England, makes the nominations after having snatched 52 wickets from just 11 matches It has already made him one of the bright fast-bowling talents in the game of cricket all around the globe.

With deadly pace and efficiency on the ball, he becomes a challenge, and a nomination to this emerging Cricketer award is an acknowledgment of those skills that were seen as very impressive. Completing the list of Ayub and Atkinson are Shamar Joseph of the West Indies and Kamindu Mendis of Sri Lanka, who both had superb years in international cricket.

Joseph is a very promising fast bowler who picked up 29 wickets from 8 Test matches in 2024, a performance that has catapulted him into the list of the most promising young bowlers in the sport.

Mendis was a batting all-rounder and managed to score 1,451 runs in 32 matches which proves his multidimensional role and skillfulness as a cricketer. The nominees were announced by the International Cricket Council, or ICC, on 28 December 2024 and the winners will be revealed in January 2025.

Along with the Emerging Cricketer of the Year, the ICC has also announced to hand out prizes in 12 different categories to applaud the outstanding performers of the year 2024 across the world.

The ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year is an exclusive recognition of the best up-and-coming talent in international cricket. This award goes to a player who makes the most difference on the world stage by displaying impressive skills, devotion, and enthusiasm for the game.

The winner of the award is chosen by a panel of experts, who consider performances from the nominated players for the entire year. It testifies to the ICC’s commitment to recognizing emerging talent in cricket and is also a platform for young cricketers to showcase their talents and achieve their dreams.

The final winners are to be announced in January 2025, but the cricket world is waiting to see who will be crowned the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2024.
