MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a change in the leadership of the T20 team and according to reports, Shreyas Iyer is being planned to be the new future captain.
According to Indian media reports, the continuous poor batting form of current T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has worried the selectors and board officials, after which Shreyas Iyer is being considered for the leadership.
According to the report, under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, India achieved great successes, including the Asia Cup 2025 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 title. He became the third captain to win the T20 World Cup for India after Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.
However, his personal batting performance has been in constant decline in the last two years. Suryakumar Yadav scored 429 runs at an average of 26.81 in 2024, while in 2025 he could score only 218 runs in 21 matches, where his average fell to 13.62 and strike rate also dropped to 123.16.
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has impressed in the IPL not only with his batting but also with his leadership skills. He led Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings to the IPL final, while also winning the title for Kolkata in 2024.
Indian reports have said that after the end of the IPL, India has to play consecutive white-ball series against Afghanistan, England, Ireland, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, in which case the BCCI may decide to change the leadership soon or in stages.
