Pink eye spreads in Pakistan: How to protect yourself from the highly contagious virus

Conjunctivitis spreads in Pakistan: How to protect yourself from the highly contagious virus

LAHORE: A sudden surge in conjunctivitis, commonly known as pinkeye virus, has affected Punjab, with state-run hospitals reporting a significant number of cases in the past 24 hours.

According to local media reports, approximately 900 cases of pinkeye have been recorded across the province, with the highest numbers reported in Jhang (106 cases), Multan (93 cases), Bhakkar (83 cases), DG Khan (41 cases), and Lahore (11 cases).

Over the past 30 days, public hospitals in Punjab have seen a total of 13,473 cases of pinkeye, indicating a widespread outbreak.

However, the Punjab Health Department has noted a 5% decrease in the incidence of pinkeye this year, attributing the decline to the monsoon rains.

This is a significant drop compared to the same period last year, when over 288,000 cases were reported from January to September 2023.

How does this virus spread

Conjunctivitis is a common and self-limiting condition that affects the lining of the eyelid and eyeball. It is highly contagious and can spread easily through:

  • Contact with contaminated surfaces
  • Close contact with infected individuals
  • Even through conversations

How to prevent the virus

To prevent further spread, health officials are advising individuals with pinkeye to take precautions, including:

  •  Wearing dark glasses
  •  Separating their bedding and utensils
  •  Isolating themselves if they contract the infection

The public is urged to take preventive measures to avoid contracting pinkeye, as it can spread quickly. With proper treatment, pinkeye can be managed at any stage, and individuals are advised to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms.
